Arizona Immigration Law

I moved to Arizona 3 months ago to the day. Recently my new home state has become the center of media attention with its passing of the Arizona Immigration Law. At first I somewhat supported the law, as i know there is a huge problem with illegal immigration, but something just did not seem right and I could not quite put my finger on it, I am embarrassed how long it took me to realize this law is incredibly unconstitutional . Since I now live in Arizona, many people have asked me for my opinion on the law. Well here it goes:This law is an invasion of Civil liberties. If the state of Arizona ( or this country for that matter) truly cared about solving the problem of illegal immigration they would end all government programs Ex: welfare, public school, food stamps, government housing etc. having instructions and classes taught in Spanish instead of English. The government CREATED all these programs, and thereby CREATED the illegal immigration problem we have today. The solution to illegal immigration is getting rid of all government programs and handouts. The solution is not infringing on our civil liberties, our right to travel, or our right to not be questioned without probable cause. The reason why "Illegal immigrants" are a problem is because they are a drain on our economy due to the welfare state and government handouts, if these programs were abolished only those willing to work and learn English would come. This would be a blessing to America, they would benefit our economy by working here, and spending their money here as well. The United States constitution does not only pertain to US citizens, but to EVERYONE. The constitution is based on the belief that “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL AND ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN INALIENABLE RIGHTS” As written in our declaration of Independence. This is the same reason why I oppose torture of suspected “terrorists” and why I oppose abortion. Just because these people are not “citizens” does not mean they do not have the rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is a classic case of the government breaking our leg, and then expecting a medal when they set it. You cant fix “big gov” with “more gov”, you can not fix a problem caused by the fed by expanding the power of big brother to ask for our “papers.” Do you think our founding fathers saw a world where we all walked around with our “papers”, do you think they saw a world where we had to show proof of ID to every thug with a badge that wanted to harass us? Do you think they saw a world where everyone had to have a social security number that identified them? NO. I am not a number I am not a code I am a human being. Any government that is willing to harass non citizens on its land, will eventually use that power to harass its own citizens. And for a rather fitting movie quote “ It does not say RSVP on the statue of liberty!”Here is a copy of the law: http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070h.pdfthank you to those of you who helped me to see the truth of what this law really is about! side note: I am not saying state and local governments can not have public services. But they can be paid for through sales taxes... therefore anyone buying goods will be paying for taxes regardless of their "status"..no papers or ID neccessary!

  1. That's a good post, Kassie. I'm from the Northeast, so I'm not familiar with the law the way you, as an AZ resident, would be. If it weren't so late, I'd comment more. Perhaps I will tomorrow...
